Whether you're running a hair extension business or buying hair extensions yourself and then going to a salon for installation.

When you get your hair extensions, the first thing to do is simple: Check if it's really the kind of hair you wanted.

If you planned to buy synthetic hair, no worries. Synthetic hair has a clear price and quality. Most sellers don't try to fake it. But if you ordered "100% human hair"? Then you need to be extra careful.

Is what you got truly all human hair? Could a bad supplier have mixed in some synthetic hair without telling you? Before installing, most hair looks about the same. But once you wear it, the difference in comfort and price is huge.

So learning how to tell human hair from synthetic hair is something every buyer needs to know.

As someone who's been making hair extensions for over 10 years, I'll show you a few simple and useful ways to test at home.

They're fast, easy, and can help you avoid big problems.

No rush, let's go step by step. I'll show you how to check, how to test, and what to watch for.

Why Should You Test Hair Extensions?

Many hair extensions feel super soft and smooth when you first get them. It's easy to think you bought the right kind.

But once you install them, the problems show up: itchy scalp, tangling, shedding, and even allergic reactions.

That "smooth" feeling doesn't always mean it's real human hair. Synthetic hair is made from plastic. It can feel nice at first, but it's a whole different story when worn.

You wear these extensions on your head all day. Comfort matters, and the difference between human and synthetic hair is big. That's why testing your hair is so important.

Human Hair vs. Synthetic: Big Price Gap

Human hair is expensive to source. The average raw material price for 1 gram of real human hair is about ¥5–10 RMB ($0.70–$1.50 USD).

Synthetic hair is much cheaper. The raw material costs only ¥0.1 RMB per gram (about $0.014 USD). That's a 50 to 100 times difference in price!

Even more, the longer the human hair, the higher the price. Lighter colors also cost more. Higher hair ratios? Also, it is more expensive.

But synthetic hair isn't like that. Length and color don't really change the cost; it's just plastic pulled by machines. The more they pull, the cheaper it gets. So the price stays almost the same, no matter how long or what color it is.

So when you get a bundle of hair, you need to know if it's truly 100% human hair.

Some bad suppliers mix in a small amount of synthetic hair to cut costs. It's hard to tell by eye, but once it's installed, the difference is huge. It can poke the scalp, melt with heat, or feel hot and heavy. That can ruin the client's experience in minutes.

Real Hair Feels Better to Wear

Human hair comes from real people. Hair from all over the world is made of keratin, just like your own hair.

So when you wear human hair extensions, they feel natural and soft. They stay cool and comfy all day. No itch, no heat, no strange feeling.

But synthetic hair is different. It's made from plastic, a byproduct of oil. It may look like real hair, but it's really just plastic fibers, and it feels stuffy and hot on your head.

Big Difference in Styling

Want to curl or straighten your hair with a hot tool? Here's where the difference really shows.

Human hair can take the heat. Its melting point is over 200°C. You can safely use a curling iron or flat iron at 180°C, and the hair will still look great.

But synthetic hair melts at just 120°C. Go any hotter, and it starts to burn, melt, or turn crispy.

One mistake and instead of a cute curl, you've got melted hair on your tool.

Poor Breathability

Real human hair extensions are made with hair of different lengths. This makes them look more natural, feel lighter, and let your scalp breathe.

Human hair can also absorb water and oils, so even if you wear it all day, your head won't feel too hot. A quick wash will make it feel fresh again.

But synthetic hair is different. It's often all one length, thick, and heavy. Worse, the material itself is "water-repelling and oil-absorbing."

So when you're wearing synthetic hair, and you sweat or get oily, the hair can't absorb any of it. Sweat stays trapped near your scalp, making you feel hotter, itchier, and more uncomfortable the longer you wear it.

Allergy Risk

Good quality human hair is cleaned and disinfected before it's sold. It's free of dirt or other stuff, so it feels just like your own hair. Most people won't have any allergic reaction.

But synthetic hair is made from plastic. If your skin is sensitive, it might bother your scalp.

You may feel itchy, red, or even start peeling. In bad cases, you won't be able to wear it for long.

Color Can Tell You a Lot

After making hair extensions for over 10 years, I can tell you that color is a big clue to whether hair is real or not.

White or silver gray extensions? Over 98% of those are synthetic.

To bleach real human hair to pure white, you have to remove all the color inside the hair. This process causes heavy damage to human hair and greatly shortens its lifespan. Most suppliers won't even try it.

The lightest real color you'll usually see is #1001A (platinum blonde). That's already the limit for human hair.

But synthetic hair is easy to color. Just add dye during production, white, silver, gray, no problem. It's cheap and fast.

So when you see white or gray hair bundles, they're almost always synthetic or made from wool. Real human hair almost never comes in those colors.

It Hurts Your Business

If you're in the hair extension business, and you don't test your first order, you're risking a lot.

Let's say you install hair on a client and only then realize: it's mixed with synthetic fibers. It pokes the scalp, gets tangled, won't hold style, and maybe even causes allergies.

Your client gets upset. They ask for a refund, leave bad reviews, or stop trusting your brand. All that damage was just because no one tested the hair at the start.

What Does Synthetic Hair Really Come From?

To put it simply, synthetic hair is a plastic fiber. It's made from oil-based materials and turned into manufactured fibers. Sounds fancy, but it's really just plastic used for wigs.

The biggest thing about synthetic hair? It's cheap. It also comes in many colors and bold styles, so it's great for costumes or stage looks.

Sometimes, it can even look like real hair from far away. But once you wear it, you'll feel a big difference compared to human hair.

What Tools Do You Need to Test Hair Extensions?

Want to know if your hair extensions are real or fake? It's not as hard as you think.

Sure, you could send them to a lab for testing, but that takes time and money. And for most people, it's just not worth it.

That's why we suggest a faster, easier, and safer way: Test it at home using simple tools you probably already have. No special machines needed. You'll get clear results in just a few minutes.

Here are the tools we often use:

Tool What to Use What It’s For
Curling Iron / Flat Iron Choose one with temperature control. It helps you test at different heat levels. Heat styling test
Long Lighter Use a long-handled lighter to stay safe during burning tests. Burn test
Bowl of Water A clear glass bowl works best. It helps you see if the hair sinks or floats. Water float test
Hair Dye / Bleach Powder Use real salon dye or bleach. It gives clear color results. Dye test
Tweezers / Metal Plate Use heat-safe tools to hold the hair during burn tests. Protect your hands from burns. Safety support

What Are the Best Ways to Test Hair at Home?

Got your tools ready? Great, now let's start testing!

These tests are simple and safe. You can do them at home by yourself. Don't worry, I'll walk you through each step.

Heat Styling Test (Curling Iron or Flat Iron)

Take a small piece of hair. Use a curling iron or flat iron, and heat it to about 180°C (356°F). Style it like you normally would, straighten or curl it. If the hair melts, changes shape, or sticks to the tool, there's a good chance it has synthetic fiber in it.

Also, look closely at your tool after the test. Do you see black spots or sticky marks? That's a common sign of melted synthetic hair.

Here's another trick: Curl the hair, let it cool, then wash it. If it stays curly after washing, it's probably synthetic.

Why? Real human hair usually goes back to normal after getting wet, unless it's natural curly hair to begin with.

Water Test

Fill a bowl with room temperature water. Drop in a small bunch of the hair you want to test.

Real human hair will soak up water and sink to the bottom. That's because it has a natural cuticle layer that absorbs moisture.

But synthetic hair is different. It's made from lightweight fibers that don't absorb water, so it usually floats on the surface.

One thing to keep in mind: If the hair sinks, it doesn't always mean it's 100% human. Some mixed hair has a small amount of synthetic fiber that won't show up clearly in this test.

So, this test is best used as a supporting check, not your only method.

Burn Test

This is one of the easiest ways to check if hair is real. Take a small piece of hair and carefully light it with a lighter.

Synthetic hair will burn with black smoke and leave behind a hard, black ball. You can't crush it into ash. It smells bad, like burnt plastic.

Human hair burns differently. It has a soft flame, no black smoke, and turns into gray ash that you can easily crush with your fingers. It smells a bit like burning feathers or protein, nothing sharp or chemical.

Mixed hair (real hair with some synthetic) can show both signs: a little black smoke, a stronger smell, and maybe a black lump left behind.

Safety tip: Always be careful when using fire. Place the hair on a metal plate or hold it with tweezers. Use a long lighter to keep your hand away from the flame. Synthetic hair can drip when it burns and might cause burns. Be extra careful!

Dye or Bleach Test

This test helps you check if the hair can take color. It's also a helpful clue to tell if the hair is real or fake.

Synthetic hair can't be dyed or bleached. Even if you soak it in dye for a long time, the color won't change at all.

But be careful some real hai* may also fail to bleach if it's been overly processed by the supplier. The hair might be damaged and not take color well.

Here's what to do: Try dyeing a small piece of hair with regular hair color. If the color changes, it's most likely real human hair. If it doesn't change at all, it's probably synthetic.

This test works best when used along with other tests. Don't rely on it alone, but as a backup, it's very helpful!

Touch Test: Feel the Hair from Both Directions

This test needs no tools, just your fingers. It's simple and super useful.

Synthetic hair has no cuticle (the outer layer of real hair). So no matter which way you rub it from top to bottom or bottom to top, it always feels smooth.

But real human hair is different. If you rub from top to bottom, it feels smooth. But if you rub from bottom to top, you'll feel a little roughness or resistance. That "scratchy" feeling is the hair's natural cuticle.

One thing to note: Some suppliers use strong acid to remove the cuticle, to stop the hair from tangling. This treated hair feels smooth both ways, but it's not high quality, and won't last like Remy hair, which keeps the cuticle in the same direction.

So this test is great for checking if the hair is truly good quality human hair.

How Can You Avoid Common Mistakes When Buying Hair Extension?

We've talked a lot about how to test hair after you get it. But here's the truth: the most important step starts before you even buy.

From picking a product, placing an order, to checking the hair when it arrives, each step can have problems if you're not careful.

Let me show you a few smart tips that can help you avoid big mistakes from the very beginning.

Watch Out for Prices That Are Too Low

In China, real human hair is sometimes called "black gold." Why? Because high-quality hair, especially untreated, unbleached hair, is very valuable and expensive to buy.

Also, the longer the hair, the higher the price. Here's a simple trick: take the price and divide it by the weight (in grams). That gives you the price per gram, super helpful for spotting red flags.

For example: In China, raw 22-inch human hair costs around $0.70 per gram. And that's just for the raw hair! It doesn't include processing, coloring, or packaging costs yet.

So if someone offers you 22-inch extensions for less than that raw price, something's wrong. It might be poor-quality hair or even mixed with synthetic hair.

Low prices aren't always good. Knowing how to read the price can help you avoid bad deals.

Test a Sample Before You Order

Before placing a big order, it's best to work with suppliers who offer free or small hair extension samples.

Why? Because a high-quality hair extension factory is confident in its hair. They won't be afraid if you want to test it, compare it, or ask questions.

But be careful, some sellers don't want you to test. They only send pictures or keep pushing you to buy fast, maybe offering a small discount to rush your decision. That's a red flag.

You can start by ordering a small amount or asking for a sample. Then test it at home, check the hair texture, color, and quality.

Just remember: Some sellers send great samples, but poor-quality bulk hair. The sample doesn't always match the big order.

At GISTAR, we offer free samples to qualified hairstylists and salons. We promise: Our samples match the bulk hair exactly. What you see is what you get, no surprises. We do this to save you time, money, and stress.

Test Again After the Hair Arrives

When your hair order arrives, don't rush to install it right away.

Take a small piece and run a quick test first. Why? Because hair that looks nice in the bag might feel totally different on the head.

Comfort, smoothness, and styling can all change after wearing.

Testing the hair one more time shows you care about your work, your clients, and your reputation.
