How Do Hot Fusion Extensions Work?
The main principle of hot fusion hair extensions is to heat and reshape pre-bonded keratin bonds. During installation, the hairstylist places the keratin bond at the top of the extension strand over a small section of natural hair. A special heating tool is then used to evenly soften the keratin.
The softened keratin is gently rolled and shaped around the natural hair with the fingers, forming a small, secure bond. Once the keratin has completely cooled and hardened, the extension strand is firmly attached to the natural hair.
Which Hair Extensions Are Considered Hot Fusion?
Hot fusion hair extensions are usually classified by the shape of the pre-bonded keratin tip at the top of each extension strand. Common types include:
- Flat Tip: Also commonly called K-Tip, it has a flat, thin keratin bond at the top of the extension strand.
- U-Tip: Also known as Nail Tip, it has a keratin bond shaped like the letter U or a fingernail.
- V-Tip: It has a V-shaped keratin bond that can also be softened and wrapped around the natural hair.
In general, a larger keratin bond can hold more natural hair and usually creates a stronger connection after installation. However, the bond may also be easier to notice. A smaller bond is more discreet and can feel more natural, lightweight, and comfortable. However, it can hold less natural hair per strand. This requires more precise sectioning and installation skills, and the full installation may take longer.
What Is the Difference Between Hot Fusion and Cold Fusion Hair Extensions?
The main difference between hot fusion and cold fusion hair extensions is how the extension strands are attached. Hot fusion uses heat to soften the keratin bond. The softened keratin is wrapped around a small section of natural hair, forming a secure connection as it cools and hardens.
Cold fusion does not require heat. Instead, it uses the mechanical pressure and friction of micro beads to secure the extension strands. The attachment point of the extension is not melted or reshaped during installation.
