What Are Fusion Hair Extensions?
Fusion Hair Extensions are a category of strand-by-strand hair extensions in which individual extension strands are attached to small sections of natural hair. The extension strands typically feature pre-formed tips made or secured with keratin-based material.
Some tips are molded into specific shapes using keratin-based material, while others incorporate metal loops, plastic loops, or other components to form different attachment structures.
Based on whether heat is used during application, fusion installation techniques are generally divided into Hot Fusion and Cold Fusion.
How Do Fusion Hair Extensions Work?
Hot Fusion uses a heated fusion tool to soften the keratin bond at the top of the extension strand. The softened keratin is wrapped around a small section of natural hair, then rolled and shaped with the fingers while still soft. Once the bond cools and hardens, it securely attaches the extension strand to the natural hair.
Cold Fusion does not require heating the keratin tip. Instead, a silicone-lined microbead clamps a small section of natural hair together with the keratin tip, metal loop, or plastic loop at the top of the extension strand. The pressure created by the microbead holds the extension securely in place.
Which Hair Extensions Use Hot Fusion?
Flat Tip, U-Tip, and V-Tip hair extensions are usually installed using Hot Fusion. Their main difference is the shape of the pre-formed keratin bond, but each requires heat to soften and apply the bond.
Which Hair Extensions Use Cold Fusion?
I-Tip, Nano Ring, Plastic Nano Ring, and Y-Tip hair extensions are usually installed using Cold Fusion. Although their tip structures differ, each relies on a microbead to create a heat-free mechanical attachment.
